Strain Description: Tgfb1-/- Rag2-/- mice rapidly develop mucosal hyperplasia of the cecum and colon which progresses to adenoma and carcinoma. All mice are affected with multiple tumors by 5 months of age. Ceca and colon from Tgfb1+/+ Rag2-/- and Tgfb1+/- Rag2-/- exhibit hyperplasia, which in most cases does not develop further. There are no differences in cell proliferation, inflammation, or apoptosis in hyperplasic tissues from the three genotypes, indicating that the conversion to adenoma is a result of the inability to maintain epithelial tissue organization as opposed to loss of growth control, increased inflammatory activity or increased genetic instability.
