Strain Description: This strain carries a targeted deletion of exons 2/3 of the INK4a/ARF locus which eliminates both p16 (Ink4a) and p19 (Arf). Mice homozygous for this deletion are viable and fertile, but exhibit a cancer-prone condition. On a mixed genetic background, spontaneous development of various tumors (primarily B-cell lymphomas and sarcomas) is observed by ~6 months of age. Tumors arisen in mice heterozygous for this deletion require a longer latency and uniformly demonstrate loss-of-heterozygosity of the second allele. On a C57B/6J background, tumor latency is prolonged. In addition to the tumor phenotype, these mice, by two months of age, histologically exhibit mild proliferative expansion of the white and red pulp of the spleen. Mice older than 6 months develop more severe extramedullary hematopoesis in the spleen and other lymphoid organs such as the liver.
