| Strain Description: | MH19 is a transgenic line that overexpresses mouse Scatter factor/hepatocyte growth factor under control of the mouse metallothionein I promoter. Expression can be detected in virtually all adult tissues, at a level between 3- and 50-fold higher than the endogenous gene, Hgf (Takayama et al., 1996). Over half of the female transgenic mice die by 6 months of age of intestinal obstruction or renal failure. Hind limb paralysis due to ectopic development of striated muscle in the central nervous system was observed in 5% of the animals at 4.5-6.5 weeks of age (Takayama et al., 1996). MH19 mice developed multiple tumors at 2.5-20 months of age (Takayama et al., 1997). Lesions were of epithelial and mesenchymal origin. They included skin fibrosarcomas, hepatocellular adenomas, hemangiosarcomas, rhabdomyosarcomas, mammary tumors (Takayama et al., 1997), and malignant melanoma (Otsuka et al., 1998). MH19 mice tend to develop a rectal prolapse, which occasionally can be severe. | ||
